Reminders for a Safer Social Networking Future
For all its incredible worth and value as a social, communication and entertainment tool like no other, there is a potential downside to social networking that cannot be overlooked. Of course, this is not to say that any user is necessarily in imminent danger or that the vast majority of modern scare stories should be taken at face value, but as the world becomes more and more dependent on such sites with are already taken for granted, it is important not to lose sight of a few common sense pointers.

The simple fact of the matter is that sharing personal information regarding appearance, habits, interests, location, profession, date of birth and so on can result in consequences as minor yet annoying as abundant spam, right through to identity theft and perhaps worse. True, the vast majority of people are attracted to social media sites for purely innocent purposes and do not represent anything close to a threat, while other of a less desirable standing may treat such platforms as a veritable playground for their underhanded activates.
Criminals have the every real ability to use once rather trusted data such as date of birth, occupation, location and the like to convince businesses and other such providers that they are in fact someone they are not, so as to take on goods, services and financial products in the name of an unsuspecting third party. Furthermore, the information used in a person’s profile can sometimes offer all that is needed to guess passwords and the like so never even consider using pet names, birth dates, favorite bands, preferred brand of business suits or anything else of a similar nature currently being showcased to the world.

All in all, the key point is to remember that the more information any person chooses to share, the higher the likelihood that a malicious individual would achieve success in using said details for their own gain. Furthermore, thinking ahead is also vital as contrary to popular belief, once something is published online it cannot be retracted, and even if deleted could have been saved multiple times while live.
The bottom line? Common sense caution and never sharing any information you wouldn’t be willing to offer to any random stranger on the corner of the street.
