From YouTube to Hollywood

Once upon a time, new stars were “spotted” by directors and studio bosses while they waited tables in LA. Nowadays, everyone wants to be famous, so if you want to see your name in lights, you’ll probably have to do more than serve up a few coffees to get noticed! These days, the Internet is the place to find the celebrities of the future – and I don’t mean those appearing in dodgy sex tapes. Though that hardly did Paris Hilton’s career any harm, did it? Luckily, there are some people with real talent who are using sites like YouTube to expose the public (and perhaps even a net surfing director?) to their comic creations.

YouTube has been responsible for a lot of bad celebrities. After all, if you believe his biography, the obnoxious teen sensation Justin Bieber was discovered singing online. Forget that fact that he’d already auditioned all over LA and had the pushiest parents around, it was the Internet that made him a star – honest! However, for every Justin Bieber there is a Felicia Day. You’ve probably never heard of her, right? In fact, you’ve probably never heard of the web series she created either. “The Guild” is a comedy series about a bunch of gamers, featuring five minute episodes that were first broadcast on YouTube. Felicia initially took the idea to US TV stations and when it was turned down decided to give them a big middle finger and make the show herself with a bunch of friends. Not only is “The Guild” now an Internet sensation, but it has been picked up by MSN, which broadcast new episodes online and via Xbox Live. Die-hard fans can even buy DVDs of the first five series. Yes, five series of an online comedy show. Bet the TV execs that turned it down are feeling pretty dumb right now. I bought my vinyl stickers from this website and they are awesome – also make me feel pretty cool for being into such a great show!

So are people like Felicia Day the stars of the future? Those who buck the trend and do it themselves rather than waiting to be found? Sadly, there will always be those who use the Internet to promote themselves rather than their talent – Justin and Paris being particularly bad examples – but if you’re willing to look around you could just discover the hidden gem that will be the next “Guild”!
