Do it free!
It’s amazing what’s happening as technology grows more and more advanced, and one of the major perks of the internet age, often overlooked, is our ability now to get everything we need . . . for free.
Some examples:
Instead of investing hundreds of dollars in Microsoft Office, Open Office, a clone program, is available for free. The program is available here and includes intuitive and easy-to-use clones of Word, Excel . . . the entire Office suite. As a matter of opinion, I’ve found some components are actually a step up from Microsoft -- the simplicity of saving files as a .pdf in the Word clone, for example.
Mozilla.org makes Firefox (a web browser) and Thunderbird (an email program). Both are often considered both more secure and more reliable than equivalents like Internet Explorer and Microsoft Outlook. And the Mozilla community is always developing "add-ons," features that are also available for free to enhance and personalize the regular Mozilla programs.
Paying a few hundred a year for virus protection? Try a Free Antivirus program. (Kaspersky is a great example of a company that off both paid and free software that is really good) After paying for Norton 360 for a year, I made the switch and have had no virus problems whatsoever, all for a total cost of $0.
Likewise, instead of paying hundreds of dollars for Photoshop, Gimp (http://www.gimp.org/) is available and, for most people’s purposes, equivalent in every way.
Even these examples are only scratching the surface. A quick perusal along download.com can put you in touch with financing software, music and video programs, even old-school video games you thought you would never play again. So go on an internet shopping spree without paying a penny, and be thankful for the power of networking.
